The origin of the word Canary

Since I started this blog and the research to write my posts that was planted in my head a curiosity that I am about to clarify.
What is the origin of the word Canary?

After some research I found that there are some theories about this subject. Most people believe that this name refers to the species of canaries (Serinus canaria) the yellow bird that we all know. However, it seems that the name of the islands derives from another animal. The word "canary" comes from the word "canis" from the Latin meaning dog, according to historical records when the first explorers arrived in the islands there existed a lot of wild dogs there.

With this theory, the idea that the island had its name from the species of birds is being put aside, now we know that the species of birds acquired its name due to the islands already called Canary.

Another hypothesis for the origin of the name is that it stems from a root (cannasris or camasrius) originating from the islands. Second historical documents, this root became famous for having a large amount of liquid that apparently was very rich in protein and vital nutrients, and was much required by European sailors in their long and tiring trips.

There are other theories that link the name of the islands to a people of a region of the African Atlas, called canarii, or that link the name to a reed originated in the islands ( canna ) that has an unpleasant taste and poisonous.

The mystery is not solved but here are some hypotheses for the origin of the name of these wonderful islands!
