Carnival is
one of the most popular festivals of the islands. Over the last thirty years,
the carnival has become the most important social and economical festival of
the islands and one of its main touristic attractions. This festival is
celebrated in the month of February and lasts about two weeks.
At Carnival,
people watch the "mogollones" which are popular dances in the streets
and squares in the biggest cities of the islands; everyone goes out and wears masks
and fantasies.
In this
celebration some groups of street musicians get together and participate in
competitions, these groups are called "murgas" and sing songs about the
politic and society of the Canary Islands.
There are
also competitions for "las comparsas”, dance groups from which
participants use beautiful fantasies and costumes, with sequins and feathers. Every
year is elected Queen of Carnival.
On the last
day of Carnival is celebrated the "enterro de la sardina", an event
that marks the end of the celebration. On this day people wear black costumes
and lead the sardine to the grave.
I hope to
have the opportunity to spend the next Carnival here in the islands and I
advise all to come too!
